Air Conditioning Options

As you probably know, the Australian summertime can be extremely hot. When I moved to Australia from England, I knew it would be warm, but I wasn't ready for the intense heat. I had bought a home on the outskirts of Sydney. It was a great place but unfortunately, it didn't have an HVAC system. I moved in during the winter time, so this wasn't a problem. However, when the weather began to warm up, the interior of my home became very uncomfortable. I called in an HVAC contractor who explained my options before installing a modern HVAC system which keeps my house nice and cool.

Tips for Reducing Air Conditioning Costs During the Winter Season

by Herminia Lopez

After keeping your air conditioning on for several summer months, the winter should be a time when your AC can take a break. In some cases, people tend to run their AC in order to relieve the home of humid air. In addition, if the AC is combined with your heating system, then the winter season often causes you to regularly use your entire HVAC system on a regular basis.

Heating and cooling costs are not cheap, and you can experience a spike in your energy bills during the winter. Here are several tips that can enable you to save on air conditioning and heating costs over the winter season.

Keep the curtains open during the day

During summer months, it is often recommended to keep the curtains closed so it doesn't get too hot within the home. The opposite case applies to the winter season. Keep your curtains open so you can get some warmth from the sun. This reduces the amount of time that you will have your HVAC system on to heat the home.

When you notice the indoor temperature getting hot enough, you can close the curtains again. If you can implement this technique effectively, you will be able to reduce heating and cooling costs in your home.

Don't overuse your air conditioning

In areas of the country where the air is humid even in winter conditions, people may be tempted to keep their air conditioning running for long hours. This often leads to high AC costs during these periods. A more effective strategy is to regulate indoor humidity by using your air conditioner strategically.

If the outside air is humid, make sure you close the windows during the day while the air conditioning is on. Adding a dehumidifier in the room is also a good idea. This will result in the removal of humid air and you won't need your AC running for long hours.

A programmable thermostat can help

The best way to control both cooling and heating costs is by using a programmable thermostat. The thermostat allows you to automatically set specific temperatures in the home. You can set slightly cooler temperatures when there is no one in the home or during afternoon hours. You can even turn your air conditioning off when away for sometime and then turn it on for a short while before you return.

Schedule for regular maintenance

A faulty unit regularly causes high air conditioning costs. Make sure your AC is regularly serviced by a HVAC technician at the beginning of every seasonal change. The technician will make sure all parts of the unit are in good condition.
